Maggie Simmons of Atlantic Cruising Yachts took a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands to visit the new Waypoints USVI base and to meet with the team regarding the future of their partnership. It was her first trip outside of the continental U.S.
“My trip to St. Thomas was my first trip outside of the U.S. The moment the plane touched down in St. Thomas there was this instant feeling of serenity and a disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day world. I have never seen such clear blue water without an ounce of pollution, where the wildlife seemed so happy. The iguanas, chickens, pigs, and wild cats, roamed the streets and coexisted with the locals.
With the Waypoints USVI base positioned in the heart of St. Thomas near Charlotte Amalie – there are so many places to discover and make memories. Christmas Cove was one of my favorite stops where I took my first swim in the refreshing water and enjoyed pizza from a pizza boat! Later, I took a trip to Lovango Resort & Beach Club where I had an amazing dinner and an even more enjoyable evening.
Saturday, we took a voyage around all the beautiful islands of USVI. I was able to travel to Maho Beach, a real gem, where I saw sea turtles swimming. While in Maho Beach, I learned how to snorkel for the first time. It was a one-of-a-kind experience to see fish so closely you could almost touch them; there was even a point where I thought I might catch one! I also crossed off one of my bucket list items by jumping off the hull of the boat for the first time. It took three attempts, but I was finally successful in taking the leap. It was an invigorating experience that I will never forget. Later, my team and I stopped at a cute beach bar to grab a drink. We explored a bit and I found some unique stores to get souvenirs, items I would not have been able to find anywhere else, to take home to my family.
The last night of my trip we went to St. John. Riding on a dinghy from a mooring ball into town was such a pleasant experience. I enjoyed walking around St. John while exploring all of the wonderful little shops. Later that evening we rode back on a dinghy, which was quite interesting. I quickly learned that with a flashlight and a good captain, you won’t have to worry about getting back to your boat safely. It was fantastic seeing the stars in the nighttime while riding in a dinghy, and watching the fish jump out of the water was so cool to watch.
My trip to St. Thomas was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was a trip that opened my eyes to all of the beauty the world has to offer. I can’t wait to go back to St. Thomas and to travel to the BVI with my family.”
