Planning Your 2027 Caribbean Charter: The Dates, Seasons, and Questions Worth Sorting Out Now
A Caribbean charter has its own rhythm, and it rarely begins the week you step aboard.
It begins months earlier, with a calendar open on the kitchen table and a rough idea of when the trade winds settle in, when the water clears, and when a particular week already has your name half-attached to it.
The Caribbean sailing season runs on patterns steady enough to plan around and specific enough to reward the planning — recurring wind, a handful of events worth building a week around, and a short list of dates that fill a full year in advance.
2027 is no different. We help travelers plan charters across our Caribbean bases in the British Virgin Islands, the US Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and Belize, and the questions we hear this time of year tend to circle the same handful of things: when to go, what’s worth timing a trip around, and how far ahead any of it needs to be locked in.
Here’s what’s worth knowing before you build your 2027 itinerary.
The Caribbean Charter Calendar for 2026-2027
Before getting into each base, a few things hold true across all four:
- December through April is peak season across the Caribbean, when the northeast trades settle into a steady 15 to 25 knots and the driest weather of the year sets in. February and March tend to be the most reliable stretch of all
- May, June, and November are shoulder months — nearly the same conditions, thinner crowds, and softer rates
- June through November is hurricane season, with the highest risk running from mid-August into October. Our British Virgin Islands and US Virgin Islands bases run their official sailing season October 21 through July 31 each year, closing for the balance of the summer while the fleet comes out of the water for maintenance
- Within that season, rates step through High, Medium, Low, and Off tiers at our Virgin Islands bases. The Bahamas and Belize each follow their own structure entirely — more on that in each section below.
- Holiday weeks move first. Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter, which falls on March 28 in 2027, are typically committed 12 to 18 months out, particularly for larger crewed catamarans. Regular peak-season weeks tend to fill 9 to 12 months ahead, shoulder season closer to 3 to 6.
- Last-minute charters do happen, most often during Low or Off season. High season weeks are the first to fill at every base, so if a specific date matters to you, that’s the one worth locking in early rather than hoping for a late opening.
With that as the backdrop, here’s what 2027 looks like base by base.
British Virgin Islands: Nanny Cay, Tortola
Nanny Cay has long been one of the more comfortable places to start a charter in the BVI, a full-service marina with a pool, a beach, and a fuel dock at your slip, and this year our fleet there is growing with new Fountaine Pajot catamarans joining the lineup.
Nanny Cay’s sailing season runs October 21 through July 31.
Inside that window, High season falls December 16–January 6 and February 1–March 31, Medium season is January 7–31 and April 1–30, and Low season covers May 1–July 9 and November 6–December 15. The remaining stretches at either edge of the season, roughly the second half of July and the last two weeks of October, fall into Off season rates, right before the base closes for summer haul-out.
The date to build a week around is the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival, running March 29 through April 4, 2027. It’s the 54th running of the event, hosted right at Nanny Cay, with days of racing through the Sir Francis Drake Channel and a regatta village that turns the marina into the liveliest spot in the territory for a week. Racing it yourself or simply anchored nearby with a good view of the finish, it’s a week worth building a charter around.
A few things worth knowing before you book:
Do I need a passport for the BVI?
Yes, for every traveler, including a day trip from the USVI. You’ll also need to file the online BVI ED Card in the 72 hours before arrival, and budget for a $20 per person departure tax along with cruising and national park fees.
Is the BVI manageable for a first bareboat charter?
It’s one of the more forgiving places to start. The Sir Francis Drake Channel keeps most sailing within sight of land, moorings are plentiful, and the protected water gives first-time charterers room to get comfortable. Recent sailing experience is expected, though no formal license is required.
When should I book around the Spring Regatta?
As early as possible. Regatta week draws both racers and spectators to Nanny Cay, and it overlaps with the broader spring charter season, so boats move quickly.
Is the base open over the holidays?
Nanny Cay is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, so charters can’t begin, end, or overnight on those two dates specifically. Plan arrival and departure around them.
Can I book the BVI last-minute?
Sometimes, particularly during Low season in May, June, or early July. High season, especially the February–March stretch, is Nanny Cay’s busiest and typically the first to book solid, so it’s worth locking in early if those dates matter to you.
US Virgin Islands: Frenchtown, St. Thomas
Frenchtown remains the easiest way into the Virgin Islands for US travelers, no passport required for domestic arrivals, and a short ride from the airport to the dock. Like Nanny Cay, the St. Thomas fleet is picking up new Fountaine Pajot catamarans this season.
Frenchtown’s sailing season also runs October 21 through July 31, but its High season starts about ten days earlier than Nanny Cay’s: December 6–January 6 and February 1–March 31. Medium season is January 7–31 and April 1–30, and Low season is May 1–July 9 and November 6–December 15, with the remaining edges of the season falling into Off season rates.
The date worth knowing here is St. Thomas Carnival, which marks its 75th anniversary in 2027. The celebration runs through late April into early May with J’ouvert at dawn, food along the waterfront, and a parade route that winds down Charlotte Amalie’s Main Street, all an easy distance from the base.

Do I need a passport to charter from St. Thomas?
Not if you’re a US citizen flying in from the mainland, though a REAL ID has been required for domestic flights since May 2025. Bring a passport regardless if there’s any chance you’ll sail across to the BVI.
Is the USVI a good starting point for a first bareboat charter?
It’s one of the easiest introductions to bareboat sailing in the Caribbean: short hops to St. John and the protected mooring fields of the Virgin Islands National Park, calm water, and no license required.
What’s the best time to catch Carnival?
Late April into early May, though it’s worth confirming exact dates closer to the year, since the parade schedule shifts slightly year to year.
Is last-minute booking realistic in the USVI?
It can be, especially during Low season in late spring or early November. High season, and February–March in particular, fills first, so if your dates are fixed, that’s the window to secure early.
Bahamas: Abaco
The Abacos sail differently than the Virgin Islands, shallower, more sheltered, and dotted with small towns instead of resort marinas. Boat Harbour Marina sits inside the Abaco Beach Resort in Marsh Harbour, itself a Bahamas port of entry, which simplifies the first day considerably.
It’s also home to a style of chartering unique to Cruise Abaco: Captained by Day, Bareboat by Night℠. A professional captain sails with you through the Sea of Abaco each day, guiding you toward the best snorkeling and anchorages, then steps ashore each evening so the boat, and the anchorage, are yours alone until he returns the next morning. It’s a middle ground for charterers who want expert guidance on the water without giving up their evenings, and it sits alongside standard bareboat and fully captained options.
Pricing here follows a different pattern than the Virgin Islands. High season covers the Christmas holidays, December 22–January 5, and picks up again in spring; Medium season runs April 28–December 21; and Low season, somewhat counterintuitively, falls January 6–March 3 — likely a reflection of the same winter cold fronts mentioned below rather than water conditions, since the sailing itself is still good through that stretch.

When should I plan an Abaco charter for 2027?
December through April, same as the rest of the Caribbean, though winter cold fronts known locally as “Northers” can pass through every week or so between January and March, shifting the wind and worth keeping an eye on. That same window also happens to be Low season on the rate sheet, which can make it a good value stretch for flexible sailors.
How does sailing the Abacos compare to the Exumas?
The Abacos are more protected and closer together, with towns and services within easy reach. The Exumas run more remote and call for more experience to sail well. Our Bahamas base is in the Abacos, in Marsh Harbour specifically.
What paperwork does a Bahamas charter require?
A passport for every traveler, plus a cruising permit, which the base handles on your behalf. Fee structures were adjusted in 2026, so it’s worth confirming current details when you book.
How does Captained by Day, Bareboat by Night work?
Your captain joins you the morning after you arrive and stays with you through the rest of the week, but he’s dropped off each evening wherever you’ve anchored, leaving the boat entirely to you overnight. He returns the next morning whenever you’re ready to get underway, and on your final sailing day he brings the boat back to Marsh Harbour, where you spend a last night at the marina before checkout begins at 8am for a 10am departure.
Is this a good option for less experienced sailors?
Yes. The Sea of Abaco is sheltered and forgiving, with plenty of protected anchorages, though it still rewards attention to the area’s shallow banks and tidal changes.
Can I book Marsh Harbour last-minute?
More easily than at our Virgin Islands bases, especially during the January–early March low season. The holiday week and the spring high season fill first, so those specific dates are still worth locking in ahead of time.
Belize: Cucumber Beach Marina, Belize City
Belize sails differently again. Behind the second-largest barrier reef in the world, the water inside stays calm nearly year-round, and every charter here is all-inclusive and crewed: a captain and a chef aboard for the week, which suits the reef navigation involved and makes for an easy, looked-after trip for families and first-time charterers alike.
Pricing works differently here than at our other Caribbean bases. Rates hold steady across most of the year, published as a single range for January 6–December 18 with a four-night minimum. The one real shift is the holidays: December 19–January 5 carries its own tier, priced roughly double the standard rate, with a seven-night minimum stay.
The date worth watching is whale shark season, which runs around the full moons from March through June, with April and May typically the strongest window. Sightings happen off Gladden Spit, a distance from our Belize City base, and it happens, but there’s no guarantee on any given week. Still, for divers and snorkelers building a spring trip, it’s worth asking about when you book.

Is Belize bareboat or crewed?
Crewed only. Every charter includes a captain and a chef, which makes sense given the reef navigation and marine park regulations throughout the cruising grounds.
When’s the best time to sail Belize in 2027?
Roughly November through May, with February through April offering the most reliable trade winds and clearest water. Watch for the occasional winter “Norte,” a brief northerly blow that can move through the region.
Where does the charter start?
Cucumber Beach Marina, about 15 minutes from Belize City’s international airport, with direct flights from a number of US and Canadian cities.
Can I really see whale sharks?
It’s possible, though never guaranteed on any given trip. The best odds fall around the full moons of April and May, off Gladden Spit near Placencia. Ask your consultant about timing if it’s a priority for your itinerary.
Is last-minute booking possible in Belize?
More often than not, given that rates hold fairly steady most of the year rather than stepping through a full high/medium/low structure. The exception is the December 19–January 5 holiday window, which carries the seven-night minimum and books solid first. Because every charter here is crewed, availability also depends on pairing the right captain and chef, so booking earlier still gives more flexibility.
