Fall Sailing on Chesapeake Bay: September-October Charter Guide & Anchorages

Share:

Planning a Chesapeake Bay sailing charter this fall? You’re choosing the best time to experience America’s most beloved sailing destination.

Fall sailing on the Chesapeake offers everything sailors dream of: reliable northwest winds, comfortable temperatures, spectacular foliage reflecting off pristine waters, and authentic maritime experiences away from summer’s crowds.

The season delivers consistent 8-15 knot winds perfect for both relaxing day sails between anchorages. Air temperatures settle into the comfortable 60s and 70s.

Most importantly, fall brings the Bay’s authentic character to life – oyster season returns with traditional festivals, historic waterfront towns celebrate maritime heritage, and you’ll find peaceful anchorages that were packed just months earlier.

From the Waypoints’ Annapolis base, fall charter guests discover boat-accessible destinations that showcase why the Chesapeake remains one of America’s premier sailing destinations.

With our base open through the end of October, we’re happy to share more about making the most of September and October on the Chesapeake.

September: Summer warmth meets fall’s first crisp winds

September offers a gentle transition from summer’s heat to fall’s comfortable sailing conditions.

Air temperatures range from pleasant 75°F highs to mild 60°F lows, while water temperatures still hover around 70-75°F.

The month brings the season’s first reliable northwest winds without the intensity of later fall months, making it perfect for sailors of all experience levels.

September also marks the beginning of harvest season and maritime festival time. Local restaurants begin featuring the first oysters of the season, and waterfront communities prepare for their busiest celebration period. This is when the Bay comes alive with authentic maritime traditions.

Prime September destinations from Annapolis:

  • Shaw Bay (Wye River System) – 22 nautical miles: One of the Bay’s most expansive anchorages with 12-18 feet of depth and protection from all but north winds. The bay becomes beautiful in fall with colored leaves reflecting off the waters that lap against Wye Island’s undeveloped shoreline
  • Granary Creek: Complete wilderness immersion in one of the Bay’s wild, undeveloped anchorages where state ownership preserves pristine character

September 2025 Events:

  • Maryland Seafood Festival (September 13-14, 2025, Sandy Point State Park, Annapolis): The 57th annual celebration featuring live music, chef demonstrations, crab soup cook-off, skipjack heritage days, and over 50 seafood dishes. This is one of the biggest seafood festivals in the world, accessible by boat from Annapolis Harbor.

October: Peak sailing conditions and spectacular foliage

October delivers the pinnacle of Chesapeake sailing with ideal daytime temperatures in the upper 60s, spectacular fall foliage, and the Bay’s most reliable wind patterns.

This is the moment experienced sailors wait for, knowing conditions will be nearly perfect for extended cruising.

Water temperatures remain comfortable at 60-65°F, while foliage reaches peak brilliance mid-month. Dense forests along river systems create postcard-perfect reflections on calm anchorage waters.

October brings oyster season into full swing with traditional festivals and the authentic maritime celebrations that define Chesapeake character.

Premier October anchorages:

  • St. Michaels (Miles River) – 25 nautical miles: Multiple anchorage options including Parrott Point for front-row boat parade views, Perry Cabin side for luxury resort views with less traffic, and San Domingo Creek for the ultimate “secret back door” with bald eagles nesting among small sandy islands
  • Reed Creek (Chester River) – 35 nautical miles: Few charterers venture here despite excellent protection and spectacular fall colors, offering true seclusion
  • Langford Creek: Multiple secluded coves for extended exploration, each providing different protection and scenic Eastern Shore agricultural landscapes
