Bareboat vs. Captained Charters

A formal sailing license isn’t required to bareboat a charter, but recent and relevant experience is essential. You need to have handled vessels of similar size and type to the one you want to charter, and done so recently enough that the skills are genuinely current.

Depending on your background, our team may require a checkout captain for one or more days.

Key factors we consider:

  • Recent sailing experience — how often have you sailed in the last five years?
  • Boat familiarity — have you sailed vessels of similar size and type to the one you want to charter?
  • Ownership history — prior boat ownership and an understanding of onboard systems matters
  • Cruising experience — have you navigated point-to-point, anchored, and docked under real sailing conditions?
  • Coastal/ocean experience — San Diego charters can include open Pacific sailing; experience on comparable open water is relevant
  • Twin screw experience — required for powerboats and relevant for sailing catamarans; plan on familiarization time if this is new territory
  • Crew capability — on catamarans and larger vessels, at least one actively capable crew member is expected
  • Formal training — ASA certifications are valuable context but practical experience is the primary measure

Tipping is customary and appreciated regardless of captain type. Standard guidelines across Waypoints destinations:

  • Full-time captain or instructor: $75–$125/day
  • Checkout captain (8 hours): $50–$100

Full-time captains require their own cabin aboard the yacht (not a bow cabin).

Booking A Charter

San Diego is a year-round sailing destination, one of the genuine advantages of Southern California’s climate. There is no off-season closure. Conditions are excellent across all twelve months, with mild temperatures and reliable afternoon sea breezes throughout the year. Morning fog is common from May through early July but typically clears by midday.

No. San Diego is entirely within the United States — standard government-issued photo ID is sufficient for domestic charters within US waters.

If your charter takes you close to the US-Mexico maritime boundary, your crew will advise on any documentation requirements. For standard bay and coastal itineraries, no additional documentation is needed.

U.S. dollars. Credit cards are accepted at marinas, restaurants, and most establishments throughout San Diego.
